Mystery Solved
Well, this has been quite the week for little man. It all started Friday night (or more like Saturday morning) when Cole woke up screaming w/ a 102.2 fever. We got it down with a cold bath and some Tylenol. The next day he was not himself and was fighting a fever all day. That evening after his feeding he threw it all back up! Yep that was fun clean up. I won't mention how many messy diapers we dealt with b/c honestly I lost count. I was counting his wet diapers to make sure that he was not getting dehydrated. Sunday...same story. Monday, I stayed home we him. No fever, but he slept a lot. We abandoned solids after the incident on Saturday, decided milk was less likely to come back up. He was not nursing very well, but I could coax him into often enough. Tuesday, he went back to school, but even his teachers noticed he wasn't back to 100%. That evening I noticed a weird rash/pink spots on his body as I was giving him a bath. Later that night as I went to put him to bed...the nightmare began....Little man screamed and fussed for over an hour. Nothing I tried seem to get him to sleep. It became obvious pretty early on that he must be in some kind of pain--he has different types of cries and this sounded like a "pain" cry to us. It was impossible to decipher where the pain was coming from. I knew he had been teething, but he wasn't showing any of the normal teething signs "i.e. fist in mouth etc.". Earaches are always a possibility, but he wasn't favoring one side over the other or pulling on either ear. Gas...well no signs of tummy issues. Okay, we were at a loss, but we knew something wasn't right. I eventually coaxed him to sleep. The saddest part was watching him moan himself to sleep. Yep, his eyes were closed, he was laying against me and moaning until eventually he drifted off to sleep. Ah...so sad. He was up of course several times in the night. At first we went back to sleep with not too much trouble, but at 5am, it started all over again and we spent another hour or so trying to get back to sleep. Mother and son ended up falling asleep together...exhausted...Took him to the doctor this morning, of course he was smiling and acting like his happy little self. I was thinking, "great no one is going to believe me that we had a terrible night!" But, wouldn't you know it little man had not one, but two ear infections (which would explain why one side wasn't better than the other!) and the rash was from the viral infection he had over the weekend. Of course, the antibiotic for the ear infection is now going to cause more diaper issues...yeah for that:-) Oh, well. I'm just glad that we know what is going on and that he is sleeping well today and will hopefully be back to normal soon.

Oh that's so sad. 99% of either Charles or Ryan's illnesses have been ear infections. It's weird because they don't always show symptoms of pain, but the fever, reduced appetite and maybe increased clingingness would clue me in. Oh and when Cole starts to walk you can watch to see if he starts falling or losing his balance. But seriously, they don't always show signs, and I've taken the kids to the doctor before for routine checkups/shots and found out that their ears were infected. !?! Looks like Cole is doing a better job with communicating and letting you know something is wrong.
awww poor cole! sick babies are not fun - emelia had a UTI when she was around 5 months old and it was terrible for her - the often painful cry, fever, and then refusing milk put us in the ER (which was even worse!)...it's just so heartbreaking when they are sick! sounds like you did a great job of keeping a close eye on cold and trying to figure it all out! hope he's feeling much better very soon!
