Just thought I'd share a quick note about how our morning went.
This morning when Cole woke up I brought him downstairs to play a little while I finished getting ready for work. I was running late, as usual, and had not fed him at 7 like I try to. Well, at 7:07 Cole saw me walk by. He stopped what he was doing and looked up at me and signed "MILK". I responded with, "Are you ready for some MILK?". After which, I picked him up, sat in our favorite nursing chair and nursed him. While I was nursing, Cole looked up at the fan and signed "FAN". I responded with, "Oh, you're looking at the FAN? Do you see the FAN move?". During this time, Nick came downstairs. Soon afterwords, he took Cole from me so I could get all of our stuff in the car. Then, I came back, picked Cole up, said "time to say BYE-BYE to Daddy." After which, Cole continued to sign BYE-BYE as we were leaving the house.
Wow. Too Fun! Even during a rushed morning, Cole, Nick and I had some fun opportunities to "talk" about our morning!
Cole's soaking in new signs every day. We now have the following signs he can make: MILK, MORE, DOG, BYE-BYE, FAN(very new), BANANA(very new), LIGHT. Sign's he recognizes: EAT, ALL DONE.

Note: Just thought I'd add this quick note. I re-read some of my older entries and realized that around Aug. 10th is when Cole started signing LIGHT. Now, we can't go anywhere without Cole pointing out all the lights he sees. He will frequently go up to a light (i.e a lamp) that is off and will sign LIGHT. Of course, he loves it when an adult comes over and turns the light on and off repeatedly while he squeals in laughter!
Note: I've been asked why I bother teaching non-essential signs like LIGHT and DOG. At first I didn't have a really good explanation other than 'that's what the books tell you to do'. But now I've seen first hand how fun it is for Cole to be able to share with us the things he sees and 'talk' about the things that interest him. For example, at the airport we saw a German Shepherd working dog walk right in front of us. I would have probably ignored the incident, if Cole hadn't been madly signing DOG. Once I realized that this was a big deal for him, I turned him so he could see the dog a little longer and I talked to him about the dog's color, what the dog was doing etc...Cole, in fact, was happy to sit on my lap and look at the dog for a good length of time. If I'd miss the sign I might have taken him to change a diaper or might have tried to get him interested in a toy and most likely he would have fussed at me....Anyway, a little insight into why signing is both fun and important for babies.:-)

Leslie, I'm a little late making this comment, but I think it's cool you are teaching Cole to sign. I've been in situations where I couldn't hear what was being said over the noise, but could see the interpreter. If only I could understand them, I could have known what was going on.
