I can TALK:-)

Cole continues to amaze me! A few weeks ago, he was hungry and was signing MILK while he was sitting on my lap. I was trying to keep him distracted for a few more minutes with some books b/c I wasn't quite ready to feed him. Meanwhile, I look down and there's my son with his Mealtime Sign book open to the Milk page, alternating betweening pointing to the baby and pointing to the bottle. Well, I'm a little slow, but I guess I got his MESSAGE! Needless to say, he got fed. Fast forward to last night. This time I had him on my lap looking at books. I knew he was tired but it was a little too early for bedtime, so I was trying to keep him happy with some books. Well, he tried to crawl out of my lap and stretched to reach the basket of books (which is one of his favorite things to do when he is in that chair:-). He grasp his Bedtime Sign book, sits back in my lap and opens it up to the last page. This page has all of the sign pictures on it. He points repeatedly to the picture of the baby in the crib. Then closes the book and throws it on the floor along with the other books we had been looking at. Well, once again, I got the MESSAGE! Needless to say that boy was fed and asleep in bed in no time!

Cole can now say "one/un" in french. Nick thinks it's ridiculous and laughs at me for getting so exited, but really, Cole only says "un" when we are counting in his french book. I have one board book with flaps that is written in french. I've been reading it to him for a long time. Now on every page, just as I start to count, Cole chimes in with me and says "un"--which of course is no more than a grunt really, but all the same, if you grunt for a specific reason at a specific time, that's talking right? Anyway, it cracks me up! I'll just have to get a video of it...

Leslie, this sounds amazing! What fun! I had no idea babies that can't talk could learn to sign or say easier words like 'un.' good for you teaching him to sign and also some French.

Nina is here, I think. She's still asleep and we didn't see her last night, but her door is closed now and it was open when we went to bed.

It is fun to discover all that they can really do. I know I'm constantly amazed. I do things, thinking that I'll probably never see the fruits of my labor (or that what I'm doing is probably totally over his head), and then out of nowhere Cole will amaze me with his ability to imitate/repeat or invent his own meaning for something. It does help that he is very expressive..I think some children are more observers by nature..but all the same, they're amazing!
