17 Month Update

One more month down!  Here's a quick rundown of some of the things Cole is doing these days.

Talking:  He is jabbering all the time. "Ahda, dahdi, Ahhi, Oowho and many more favorite sounds are used over and over again for many things.  Some words he uses (typically w/ a sign) are: di (drink), TuhTuh (turtle), Ah-dah (all done), Heh (Help), Hurh (Hurt), Ba (Ball), Bah (Bath), Ahsyh (Outside), muh (milk), puh (pear, peas etc), Shoo (shoes), mama or mami, dada.  His new signs for the month are: OUTSIDE, PLANE and LEAF.  Hmm...guess you can tell what we've been up to these days!

Playtime: Cars and anything with wheels are his favorites at the moment.  As I type this, I can hear him saying "vroom, whooo, MruhmMruhm"!  He can complete most of his puzzles.  He's been playing some with his wooden tool set.  Recently he got some plastic imitation tool set w/ a power drill--just like dad's!  Cole took that power drill all around my house looking for loose hinges and other things to repair!  Trains, building blocks and nesting toys are some of his favorites.  He plays with the Russian dolls at Grammy and Grampy's.  Recently, I bought him some plastic nesting barrels and those have been a great hit.

Outside: He's been riding his large car and dump truck. His feet finally touch the ground and he's finally figured out how to push himself.  A few days ago we went for a car ride/walk out on the sidewalk.  We made it past a dozen houses or so before turning around and coming back.  For part of that time Cole pushed his car instead of riding on it.  I thought he'd be exhausted...but that kid has lots of energy!  When we go outside in our backyard, Cole usually requests his BALL.  He's usually carrying it around and tossing it, or kicking it.  It's also not uncommon to see him banging on the barn door asking to go checkout dad's tool shed.  Mom doesn't allow him in there, so it is a special treat when dad's around! Those boys:-) Of course, the best part is when we go down to the local park!  Cole is pretty fearless on the equipment.  I heard that he went down the curly slide head first yesterday!

Eating:  We've discovered soup! He is an avid fan of tomato soup and cheesy torellini soup.  I've been trying new soups, like brocolli, but so far those haven't gone over so well.  He does a really good job with his spoon and even manages (at times) to get the last drop out of the bowl!  He likes having little fish crackers (or anything else for that matter...this kid eats some weird combinations) in his soup to fish out.  He's also started to eat apples w/o the skins.  I don't know why I waited so long to feed him raw apples...it just didn't occur to me.  Since he has all his teeth in, he really doesn't have a problem with chewing things.

Sleeping: This last month we really regressed in our sleeping habbits (thank you daylight savings time Grrr..).  Ever since we got back from Disney, he's been terrible at getting himself to sleep.  This past week he's been fighting off a cold, so I finally took pitty on him and started rocking him before putting him down to sleep.  Well, if I'd know all it took was 1 minute or 2 or rocking and this kid would go to sleep w/o any fussing...I'd have done this a month ago!  In talking to the Pulmonologist, she suggested we have his adnoids looked at, as those may be causing him some sleeping issues.  All the issues she mentioned are exactly the ones Cole is experiencing...so that's on our list of things to have checked out the next time we see the ear doctor.

Behavior:  Ah...sneak peak of the terrible twos:-) Poor Cole has been sitting in more timeouts lately.  He is getting in trouble for bitting and hitting.  I'm hoping we can correct this behavior soon.  All in all, he is a very well behaved boy.  He is a trooper in the stroller or in the shopping cart (although now he recognizes what goes in the cart...so sometimes he requests to hold onto his favorite cereal or bread (hmm..this one gets vetoed)).  He is great at cleaning up.  I can now ask him to pick up his cars while I'm picking up something else.  He gets most of them put away without any help or supervision from me!

Potty Training:  He is definitly learning how to use the potty.  He resist being put on the potty, but with a little distraction does just fine.  Recently, I put a bottle of bubbles in the bathroom--blowing bubbles is a great distraction!  He is going for longer stretches with a dry diaper. I've started to dress him in clothes that are easier to take on and off--no snaps:-)
