Well, I have to brag on my son a little because I think he's the smartest baby! (I'm allowed to be biased right?). Any who, for a while now I've been pretty sure that he is well aware of the baby sign for "milk"--I've been using it for a month or so and he seems to react quite appropriately and predictably whenever I make the baby sign. He can't sign back yet..or at least I haven't noticed him trying..but I'm quite sure he knows what the sign means. That in and of itself is quite amazing, but last night I was even more amazed.
I was trying to get him to hold off about 1/2 hour before feeding him for the night. It was a little early, so I decided to give him a bath (which is usually a good distraction) and play with him before feeding him. Well, I was changing him after the bath, when the full "I'm hungry and I want to eat now" episode started. I was madly trying to snap the zillion buttons on his PJs, when I had about enough of his crying and leg kicking, so I made the sign for milk and said "I know you're hungry and I promise you're going to get some milk real soon." (Knowing that is was going to be five minutes or so before I was ready to feed him). Immediately, he stopped his fussing, looked up at me, spit his pacifier out and gave me the biggest grin (which melted my heart of course)! I thought, great, he gets it--oh,no I hope he is not mad if I make him wait a little longer. But, to my surprise that was the end of the fussing. For the next five minutes or so, he waited patiently as I picked up his room, took him downstairs and got settled before I fed him. Crazy! So, not only does he understand the sign but he has the patience to wait! Well, in my book that makes him pretty smart and pretty special!:-)
